The pyramid illustrates how different learning approaches impact our ability to retain information, starting with passive learning at the bottom to active learning at the pinnacle.

The Five Levels of the Learning Pyramid

Level 1: Lecture and Passive Learning (Base)

At the base of the Learning Pyramid, we find the traditional lecture-style approach, where students passively listen to an instructor without much engagement. While lectures have their place in education, research shows that retention rates are relatively low, ranging from 5-10%. Think back to the time when your teacher or professor delivered a two-hour lecture on a complex subject. For me, that would be history. You listened attentively, took notes, and tried their best to absorb the content. However, after a few days, you were able to retain only a small fraction of the information. That’s a straightforward example of passive learning.

Level 2: Reading and Audiovisual Learning

Moving up the pyramid, the next level involves reading and audiovisual learning, which include textbooks, articles, videos, and multimedia presentations. These methods offer more engagement than lectures, but retention rates remain modest, typically around 20-30%. While visuals and text aid understanding, the lack of interactivity limits the depth of knowledge retention.

Let’s imagine you created a typical online course on graphic design without taking the learning pyramid into consideration. Your students will watch a series of instructional videos. The videos are engaging and visually appealing, enhancing the learning experience. However, without interactive exercises or practical applications, students may struggle to retain the concepts in the long run.

Level 3: Demonstration and Practice

The next level of the pyramid involves demonstration and practice, where students actively observe and then put their knowledge into action. Retention rates see a significant boost, ranging from 50-75%. This is because students engage with the material by applying it in real-life scenarios, reinforcing their understanding.

A big way of offering online demonstration and practice involves gamification. Game-based learning immerses learners in interactive and challenging scenarios, where they must solve problems, make decisions, and achieve goals to progress in the game. The competitive and rewarding nature of games naturally aligns with the active learning approach, motivating learners to apply their knowledge and master new skills.

Here’s another example for you to consider: in a culinary workshop in a physical setting, aspiring chefs watch a seasoned chef demonstrate various cooking techniques. Afterwards, they get to practice the techniques themselves under the chef’s guidance. This hands-on approach not only enhances their culinary skills but also solidifies the knowledge through practical application.

Level 4: Group Discussion and Teaching Others

Moving closer to the top of the pyramid, we find group discussions and teaching others. Here, students actively participate in discussions, share their knowledge, and teach concepts to their peers. Retention rates soar to approximately 80-90%, as teaching reinforces one’s understanding and retention of information.

Have you ever been a part of a study group? In such groups, several students gather to discuss complex concepts and solve problems together. Each member takes turns teaching a specific topic to the group. By explaining the material to their peers, they deepen their own comprehension and solidify their grasp on the subject matter.

Level 5: Immediate Application and Active Teaching

At the top of the Learning Pyramid, we discover the most potent methods for learning: immediate application and active teaching. Here, students apply knowledge immediately after learning it and engage in active teaching, such as presenting the material or leading a workshop. Retention rates reach an astounding 90-95%, as students become both teachers and doers.

Nothing solidifies learning better than real-world application. Providing opportunities for learners to work on authentic projects and internships allows them to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Engaging in hands-on experiences and real-world problem-solving not only boosts retention but also prepares learners for their future careers.

Let’s say in a public speaking course, students learn different presentation techniques and immediately apply them by delivering speeches in front of their classmates. They also take turns acting as instructors, providing feedback and coaching to their peers. This immersive and active approach cements their learning and boosts confidence in public speaking.
